It’s cheesecake season! We all know that Shavuot just isn’t complete without a cheesecake. But I have to ask—why can’t the signature Shavuot dish be something easier?! How about brownies, or cupcakes, or even a trifle? Why does THE dessert of Shavuot have to be a dessert that involves a water bath, a stand mixer, a food processor, and easily cracks if you don’t follow the recipe just right (or even sometimes if you do)?
Shavuot is the time of year when Jews have the chance to get all crazy with their dairy consumption: blintzes, kugel and of course cheesecake. As we were taking a look around the interwebs, we found so many amazing, drool-worthy cheesecake recipes to try, it is truly overwhelming. But, we persevered and picked out some of the craziest, most delicious varieties we could find including some other unique ways to enjoy cheesecake like bars, brownies and even ice pops. Finally, summer is within reach! Barbecues, Shabbat picnics, and backyard dinner parties are just around the corner, and that means it’s the perfect time to hone in on your salad game. That’s the way I see it, anyway–every picnic needs salad, so why not make it a showstopper?
I’m a cheese and dairy fanatic. So for obvious reasons my favorite holiday is Shavuot. This is when spring has sprung and my family makes a whole spread of cheese and dairy filled foods and desserts. There is always a whole ton of different cheeses, spreads, breads, fluffy cheesecake, kugel, blintzes, and, my absolute favorite, bourekas–puff pastry or a simple butter pie dough filled with cheese and either potato, mushrooms, or spinach. When you manage to get one hot out of the oven they’re heavenly!
Broccoli is such a healthy vegetable, packed with fiber and vitamins that may even help our body detox. But let’s be honest: Broccoli florets are just more appealing than the stalks. Yet we hate wasting food, especially when it’s so good for us! With so many fantastic Jewish food options in NYC–bagel shops, knisheries, bakeries and delis galore–it can be hard to decide what and where to nosh.
You know Shavuot is coming when you begin to see cheesecakes everywhere. Countless variations in the bakeries and supermarkets. Endless numbers of recipes in the media. Cheesecake is the iconic Shavuot dessert, as sacrosanct as a Hanukkah latke or Passover matzah ball.
