Once Upon a Time in Mexico: A Glimpse at Mexican Jewish History
Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning
Jewish journeys throughout history have involved many stops and detours in many different countries, and Mexico is no exception. Whether by choice or persecution, the Jewish people have had to establish new communities and make new homes for themselves around the world. In this class we will follow the Jewish journeys that brought different waves of emigration to Mexico and contributed to today’s vibrant Mexican-Jewish community.
This exciting new offering is being taught by Dr. Sara Aroeste, who has spent the last twenty years bringing her contemporary vision for Sephardic culture to audiences around the world. We will explore the fascinating history of Jews in Mexico covering Crypto-Jews, 16th century Spain and Portugal, 20th century immigrant arrivals, and more. Come learn about this exciting community and how it became what it is today.
