Matisse at War. Art and Resistance in Nazi Occupied France
Hosted By: The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted, Ostracized and Banned Art
Hosted by The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted, Ostracized and Banned Art, this book talk features author Christopher C. Gorham discussing artist Henri Matisse (1869–1954) and his determination to live and create during World War II and the German occupation of France. Although the Nazi regime labeled his work “degenerate art,” Matisse remained in France, even as his children joined resistance efforts. Despite immense personal risk and anxiety, he continued to produce groundbreaking works, including his celebrated series Jazz.
