On March 10, regional rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran announced their agreement to resume diplomatic relations. The biggest surprise was who brokered the deal: China. Beijing’s role in leading negotiations has dramatically elevated its status in the Middle East. China has long been a major economic partner for the Gulf states; it is now also a proven diplomatic mediator. What does China’s growing influence mean for the region, especially for Israel? What does it signify for the United States? Does the deal strengthen or weaken the chance of Israel’s diplomatic normalization with Saudi Arabia?
