Büşra Demirkol, Ph.D student in Near & Middle Eastern Studies and 2020-21 graduate fellow at the Stroum Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Washington, looks at how policies in the 19th-century Ottoman Empire restricted midwifery and the termination of pregnancies for the first time, targeting Jewish midwives in particular.
