Jewish Self-Defense in the Russian Empire 1903-1905

This presentation explores the relatively unexamined topic of Jewish self-defense against anti-Jewish violence in the Russian Empire prior to World War II, particularly around the failed 1905 revolution. It will cover the formation, leadership, and socio-political backgrounds of members within Jewish local guard and self-defense units, alongside the contemporary Jewish discourse regarding their effectiveness and necessity. By analyzing a variety of primary sources, the discussion aims to enhance understanding of the development of Jewish self-defense, both theoretically and practically.
