The Jews of Yemen and a Journey on the Magic Carpet

Hosted By: Qesher

The Jewish community of Yemen has existed since antiquity, but today it comprises just a handful of members. The past century saw the largest waves of immigration to Israel, the most famous was Operation Magic Carpet, in which Gavriella Bigio Dahan’s grandmother took part. Through conversations with her grandmother, Dahan learned both of her personal ordeal as a child as well as the changing way of life for Yemenites in Israel. They and their descendants have made their mark in Israeli society and have contributed much to religious study, music, crafts, and food.

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
