Jewish Lisbon and Portugal: A Community Reconnecting With its Past

Hosted By: Qesher

Qesher is hosting a virtual tour focused on the Jewish heritage of Lisbon, Portugal, with roots tracing back to the Roman era. This online journey offers an opportunity to learn about the history, traditions, and contemporary life of the Jewish community in Lisbon. The tour will also explore the history of the “conversos” who practiced their faith in secrecy following the expulsion, with a special focus on the Belmonte Jews, known for their isolated community practices. Additionally, there will be a segment dedicated to the expanding Jewish community in Porto. This virtual tour aims to provide insights into the rich and diverse history of Jewish life in Portugal.

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
