Jewish Advocacy Through New Media: Using Tech to Help the Marginalized
Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning
In 1857, rabbis in communities across Eastern Europe tried something new: they wrote classified ads on behalf of women locked in a traditional marriage to a man who had disappeared. Today, Jewish activists on TikTok, X, and the like use social media to protect more Jews who might otherwise fall through the proverbial cracks of society. Jews in the LGBTQ+ community, Jews of color, and those looking to leave insular, ultra-Orthodox communities all have new-found voices due to the technology available at our fingertips. This class will examine two hundred years of marginalized Jews who used new media technologies to advocate for themselves and, in the process, revolutionized Jewish peoplehood.
