Bialystoker The Beautiful

Hosted By: The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy (LESJC)

Join us for an evening tour of the magnificent Bialystoker Synagogue, which was built in 1826 as a Methodist Church, and is believed to be a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 2016, Bialystoker was awarded 1 of 10 of America’s Most Beautiful, Inspiring, and Unique Synagogues by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Hear a presentation of Lower East Side history and learn about the largest active congregation on the Lower East Side today.

Marvel at this synagogue, resplendent in colorful murals showcasing Tiffany-inspired stained glass windows. See its ceiling covered with rare, hand-painted, and treasured mazaales – representations of the signs of the zodiac. This is one of the few surviving examples left of what once were countless Eastern European synagogues boasting these depictions. Those synagogues (and their mazaales) were destroyed by Nazi forces. The Conservancy is the only touring organization with access to this site!

Find out why there is a lobster painted on the ceiling.

The LESJC is the only touring organization with access to this site and a portion of the proceeds are returned to the synagogue.

The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy (LESJC) is an educational non-profit, created in 1998, to preserve and support the Lower East Side’s community of living synagogues and other historic structures, and to raise public awareness of the neighborhoods distinct cultural identity. As the birthplace of American Jewish civilization, and the most iconic immigrant neighborhood in America, we share this history by taking people on walking tours which enter sacred sites, where you learn how past generations came here, lived and worshiped.
