The Torah of Human Dignity: Exploring What it Means to be Created in the Image of the Divine

Hosted By: Haberman Institute

What does Jewish tradition teach us about living with integrity and concern for other people? How should we live in right relationship with people with disabilities and other individuals frequently marginalized in our society and world? And how can we apply these lessons to our daily lives?

In this talk, these questions and more will be discussed through an exploration of Babylonian Talmud Tractate Ta’anit. In Ta’anit 20AB, the Talmud presents us with a seemingly simple yet richly layered story about the interaction between Rabbi Shimon B. Alazar and an unnamed man. The way in which the rabbi treats this man and his response has much to teach us about how we live with maximum integrity and care for all of humanity. This exploration will open us to Jewish perspectives on new ways of thinking about our relationship with others.
