Hosted By: The Olga Lengyel Institute for Holocaust Studies and Human Rights (TOLI)

In 1982 William Styron’s novel, Sophie’s Choice, premiered as a movie, one of the first popular films connected to the Holocaust. The title of the iconic book and film has become a widely-used phrase, with few knowing its origin.

On this 40th Anniversary join us for a look back at the making of Sophie’s Choice, the controversy surrounding the film, and the connection to Olga Lengyel, whose memoir of her experience in Auschwitz was an inspiration for Styron’s novel. The second half of the program will focus on how this and other films have impacted understanding and awareness of the Holocaust.

Panel:
Dr. Michael Berenbaum, renowned Holocaust scholar, museum and film consultant.
Stephanie Goodman, The New York Times, Film Editor.
Rob Eshman, Forward Columnist, will moderate the discussion.
