S.Y. Agnon’s Life & Literature: From Historic Catastrophe To the Nobel Prize

Hosted By: London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS)

In 1966 S.Y. Agnon became the first and only Hebrew author to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. How did this child of traditional Eastern Europe Jewish civilisation, and second Aliyah pioneer, reach that stage in Stockholm? What did Agnon mean in his prize speech when he said, “As a result of this historic catastrophe in which Titus of Rome destroyed Jerusalem and Israel was exiled from its land, I was born in one of the cities of the Exile. But always I regarded myself as one who was born in Jerusalem”. And how do his achievements connect with the upcoming Tisha B’av fast?
