Wandering Jews of New Jersey

Hosted By: The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy (LESJC)

Join us as we bring back wonderful memories of some NJ towns, seeing the old Bamberger’s Department Store, Beth Israel Hospital and old synagogues such as B’nai Jeshurun, B’nai Abraham, and Ohab Shalom. See the grand waterfalls of Paterson and its Jewish-owned silk factories. Explore the Jewish farming communities of Alliance, Vineland and Woodbine – the first all-Jewish “incorporated” town in the world! Everyone who ran the town, including the mayor, police chief, fire chief and town council were all Jewish and conducted their business in Yiddish! Our last stop are the old vacation spots of Lakewood and Atlantic City.

This is a one-hour zoom program and is followed by a question and answer period.

The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy (LESJC)

The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy (LESJC) is an educational non-profit, created in 1998, to preserve and support the Lower East Side’s community of living synagogues and other historic structures, and to raise public awareness of the neighborhoods distinct cultural identity. As the birthplace of American Jewish civilization, and the most iconic immigrant neighborhood in America, we share this history by taking people on walking tours which enter sacred sites, where you learn how past generations came here, lived and worshiped.
