Food Fights

What food would you use to represent Jews? Israelis? Americans? Arab Terrorists?

(Matzah, Bagels/Lox/Cream Cheese, Hamburgers, Falafel)

In this amazing video filmmaker Stefan Nadelman (the animator from The Tribe) uses food items tied to certain countries to chronicle all of the major wars since WWII.

It may take a while to load but it’s worth it:

A lot of the mediterranean foods have made it to America, like coucous. My daughter studied Africa in college and acquainted me with a lot of different recipes, which I have noticed the Jews in Israel eat, and probably in America also.

And since my step-father was Jewish, I also learned about Jewish foods. When I move to Israel, I will find the foods I am familiar with. This is becoming a universal community.

Great animation and sound-mixing. But…I wouldn’t say ALL of the major wars since WWII. For example, I’m pretty sure there’s been a war (or 30) on the African continent during the past 60 years, none of which were represented. And the billion people on the subcontinent of India might feel that their three wars with Pakistan since 1947 resulting in something like a million deaths counts as “majorâ€? warfare, considering the Arab-Israeli conflict (referenced TWICE in this video) has maybe an eight of the casualties in more than twice the number of wars.

Maybe I’m just being picky. I feel like the Arab-Israeli conflict is way over-represented in conversations about world strife in general, and this video reinforces it. For me, that weakened the otherwise important message, that war is messy. Plus, now I’m hungry.

great point. what foods do you think would represent African nations? Westerners are ignorant enough about the news coming from this continent. Would they recognize regional foods?
