Charlie Wilson’s Jews

Yesterday, I took in a viewing of Charlie Wilson’s War, the Aaron Sorkin-written, Tom Hanks-acted film about the congressman responsible for the US’s involvement in funding the Afghan resistance against the Soviets.

At first, however, Hank’s Wilson is reluctant to help the mujahideen. Why? Because the Jews won’t take well to his funding Muslims, he says. How many Jews does he have in his Texas district? Seven. But then there are those yiddin in New York and DC who contribute to his campaign because he’s a staunch supporter of Israel, he says.

It’s an interesting moment in the film, and one that made me wonder whether it’s a “true” part of this “based on a true story.”

Or perhaps it’s just an anachronistic nod to the Israel Lobby controversy.
