What is Phillip Roth’s Legacy As a Jewish Writer?

Hosted By: Haberman Institute

Philip Milton Roth went from a Jewish-American writer seemingly at war with his own community, to the epitome of the Jewish-American writer both within his community and throughout the world. How did that happen?

In this lecture, Professor Jacques Berlinerblau explores Roth’s complex Jewish identity and how it impacted his writing and subsequently Judaism itself. We ask ourselves why he steadfastly denied even being a Jewish-American writer. We close by pondering his legacy and what it might mean for the particular brand of Judaism which Roth championed, not to mention the liberal Jews who comprised his fan base.
