Virtually a Minyan: Digital Life and Jewish Community

Hosted By: Haberman Institute

How do we rebuild our communities in times of shrinking connection, narrow interest groups, and … Covid? What room is there for a digital life in Judaism?

Over the past three years, synagogues have struggled with how to maintain a community and meet daily prayer obligations. A variety of responses have been implemented across the denominational spectrum, including outdoor minyans and zoom. This four-session class will explore the rabbinic ideals of community, why minyan is so important to the sages, and why it should be important to us. We will delve into why digital minyans were rejected by some parts of the Jewish world and why they are being reevaluated by others, as well as what digital platforms could be used for and by the Jewish community.
