Virtual Walking Tour: Jewish Bucharest

Hosted By: The Museum of Jewish Heritage-- A Living Memorial to the Holocaust

Of a population estimated at 158,000 in 1948, only 2,000 Jews remain in Bucharest, Romania today. Bucharest’s Jewish community dates back to the early 16th century, with the Jewish population once comprising over 10% of the city’s population.

Explore the former Jewish neighborhood in Bucharest. Discover the history and heritage of Romanian Jews by walking past the recently restored Choral Temple (1867), known as the most beautiful synagogue in Romania. See the Great Synagogue (1848) which catered to the Ashkenazi community and the unique Yiddish theater, active to this day, where actors continue to learn Yiddish and interpret works by the great Jewish playwrights in their original language.
