The Last Gottlieb with Sophia Berry

Hosted By: Orange County Community Scholar Program (CSP)

“Jews Praying in the Synagogue on Yom Kippur”- a masterpiece by the Polish-Jewish painter Maurycy Gottlieb, who died at the age of 23 – was produced in the last year of his life and has been a part of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art’s collection since 1939. In this lecture, Sophia Berry will share Gottlieb’s unique artistic career, explore his ambiguous feelings towards his Jewish identity, and discuss at length the triple self-portraits that he integrated in the painting, together with other portraits of meaningful characters in his own life.
