The Bonds Between Biblical Women: Writing Feminist Midrash

Join feminist Torah scholar and creative writing professor Sivan Rotholz as we consider, reconsider, and write our own creative responses to women’s relationships in biblical literature.
This four-part series kicks off with Eve and Lilith, two models of humanity’s first woman. In modern midrash, these indelible archetypes offer us the first interpersonal relationship between women. Next, find out why Lot’s Wife turned back, and what we can learn from her about a mother’s love. Then, just in time for Shavuot, explore the one-of-a-kind bond between Ruth & Naomi. The series concludes with Bat Yiftach (Jephthah’s Daughter) and the community of women who hold her up as she faces her own death.
Each week we will pair the stories of unforgettable biblical women with midrash and poetry that reimagine them and their relationships with one another. We will reflect together on what each has to teach us, and add our own voices to an age-old tradition through in-class writing prompts. No previous biblical knowledge or creative writing experience necessary.
