Symbolism and Song

Pre-Chanukah Lecture – How the menorah and Ma’oz Tzur kept us strong

Each year Jews around the world joyously sing Ma’oz Tzur after lighting the menorah, yet its stanzas betray the darker backdrop on which it was composed. This lecture will explore the history and text of Ma’oz Tzur to uncover the midrashic themes which resonate through it and are reflected in the menorah’s light each year. Our study of midrashic texts, along with imagery and art of the menorah will reinforce how together this powerful symbol and song have comforted Jews for generations and provided strength in the darkest times.
