Survivors Saving Survivors
Hosted By: The National Library of Israel (NLI)
Last April, American photographer Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland, at the invitation of JCC Krakow, to photograph “survivors saving survivors”…
In other words, he was seeking to document the efforts of the Jewish Community Center, which was helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country.
Upwards of 600 refugees per day, seven days a week, would be patiently waiting in line, to gain entry to the JCC’s distribution center. Primarily women and children, they were met by Ukrainian-speaking workers and volunteers who assisted them and restocked shelves with food, clothing, medicine, diapers, hygienic supplies, toys, and essential items, all free of charge.
“Our community was decimated by the Holocaust because the world was mostly silent. Now we have the opportunity to help others, and we are doing just that”, says Jonathan Ornstein, JCC Krakow Executive Director.
Join for a moving presentation by photographer Chuck Fishman, accompanied by some of his amazing photos.
