Shakespeare & The Talmud

Hosted By: London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS)

Scholars have explored the significant influence of the Hebrew Bible on Shakespeare’s plays, but what about the Talmud? What did Shakespeare and his 16th-century contemporaries know about this centrepiece of Jewish wisdom, law and ethics?

This course will address timeless Talmudic questions in Shakespeare’s seminal works: How does one choose a spouse? What do parents owe children, and children owe parents? What are the qualities of kingship? What can prayer do? When must we exercise mercy?
