Qesher Book Club: The Marriage Box

Hosted By: Qesher

Qesher Book Club features “The Marriage Box,” a novel set in the 1970s where Casey Cohen, a sixteen-year-old Middle Eastern Jew living in New Orleans, finds herself amid trouble and a challenging peer group. Her life takes a dramatic turn when her family decides to return to their Orthodox Syrian Jewish roots in Brooklyn, introducing Casey to a culture where teenage girls display themselves in a designated area, known as the Marriage Box, for potential husbands. After a hasty marriage at eighteen to Michael, Casey struggles with cultural assimilation and personal aspirations, leading her to question the possibility of reconciling her new life with her ambitions.

Host

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
