Psychoanalysis and Jewish Languages

Hosted By: YIVO

Academic interest in “the Jewish Freud” often seeks to identify Jewish influences on Freud, his personal feelings about his Jewish identity, and any suppressed Jewish elements in his thoughts. Naomi Seidman takes a novel approach by focusing not on Freud himself, but on those who attempt to uncover his hidden Jewishness, exploring how scholars strive to connect Freud with Jewish culture through language, such as searching for his Hebrew name or ties to Yiddish. YIVO will host a discussion with Seidman, led by scholar Ken Frieden, about her book which traces the history of these efforts and examines Freud’s reactions to these pursuits, including his responses in Hebrew and Yiddish translations.
