Music among the Crypto-Jews of Portugal: An Almost Vanished World

Hosted By: Qesher

After the expulsion of Jews from Portugal, some stayed as Crypto-Jews. The early 20th century saw the “discovery” of the Jews of Belmonte and the northeast region of Tras-os-Montes, who had lived in isolation with few cultural contacts with the outside world. Judith Cohen will introduce the individuals she interviewed, and explain how songs and recited prayers work in both the religious and secular contexts.

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
