Mikdash and Memory: The Jewish Relationship to the Temple

Hosted By: The Zahava and Moshael Straus Center for Torah and Western Thought at Yeshiva University

The most famous photographic image in Jewish history is that of three Israeli soldiers at the Western Wall, seemingly starting up at the Temple Mount. What is it about the mikdash, the Temple in Jerusalem, and the site on which it once stood, that arouses such emotion? Why do Jews still mourn its loss, refuse to forget it, and yearn for its return? What does the edifice symbolize about Judaism and Jewish identity?

This lecture series will tell the millennia-long tale of a people’s relations with a sacred structure that once stood and lives on in Jewish longing.
