‘Let’s Talk of Interesting People’: The Story of Erna Friedländer (1890-1979).

Hosted By: The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted, Ostracized and Banned Art

Noit Banai, PhD from Hong Kong, and Ketul Arnold from Boulder, Colorado, present a detailed examination of Erna Friedländer’s life, a German refugee who survived Nazi persecution during World War II in Hong Kong, before migrating to England, Israel, and the United States. Friedländer’s artistic works, including paintings, watercolors, and monotypes, reflect an expressionist style influenced by early 20th-century German avant-garde circles and modern dance techniques such as the Laban Movement, featuring portraits of refugees and scenes from Chinese culture and landscapes. This event is part of the online series “Flight or Fight: Stories of Artists Under Repression.”
