Lashes of Fire: A Talmudic Metaphor for Power

Hosted By: Haberman Institute

If the admittedly obscure and difficult to translate Talmudic phrase, Pulsa D’nura (“lashes of fire”) is recognized at all in contemporary life, it is likely with reference to the pronouncement of a kind of violent kabbalistic curse uttered against Israeli Prime Ministers of Israel.

In this lecture, Dr. Bickart will present the Talmudic stories in which this phrase appears along with some parallels in other ancient literatures, in an attempt to explain how it was used as a metaphor for power in ancient Jewish society, and why those metaphors continue to resonate today.
