Lamenting Together: Community Eicha Reading

Hosted By: My Jewish Learning

The central ritual of Tisha B’Av, a Jewish day of mourning, is reading Megillat Eicha, the Book of Lamentations.

The text itself is theologically challenging and the chanting, which is unlike the way other Jewish texts are read aloud, mimics the sounds of crying. The reading is meant to help listeners more fully feel this moment of sadness. This year, our sadness comes from many directions. In every year, and even more so in such challenging times, communal moments of grief are uniquely important.

Join Rabbi Julia Andelman together with the My Jewish Learning community to find meaning and hope in this cathartic mourning ritual.

If you’d like to view the text of Eicha ahead of time, you can look at the full text here. Please note, the text includes some disturbing imagery.
