Jews of Algeria: French, Indigenous, or Both?

Qesher presents an overview of the history of Algeria’s Jewish community before, during, and after French colonial rule, more than sixty years after the mass exodus of Jews from Algeria. The session examines what made Algerian Jews distinctive among Jews who left Arab countries during this period, as most held French citizenship even though the community itself was indigenous. Participants will explore the role of antisemitism in the community’s history and the extent to which Jews and Muslims were divided by the policies of the French colonial government.
