Jews of Algeria: French, Indigenous, or Both?

Hosted By: Qesher

Qesher will present an overview of the history of Jews in Algeria before, during, and after the French presence. The talk will explore the unique history and culture of Algerian Jews, the mass exodus sixty years ago, and their distinct status as French nationals despite being an indigenous community. It will also address questions about antisemitism in Muslim culture and the impact of French colonial rule on Jewish-Muslim relations.

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
