Isaac Bashevis Singer – Bringing Jewish Folklore from Europe to America

Hosted By: Haberman Institute

This past summer was the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer. Singer successfully brought the depth and magic of Jewish folklore with himself from Poland to America, including stories of love and longing, imps and dybbuks, righteous figures and street criminals, preserving a culture and making it relevant to a new audience.

Join the Haberman Institute to survey a selection of pieces from his novels (Enemies: A Love Story, Satan in Goray) and short stories (The Spinza of Market Street, Shiddah and Kuziba, Gimpel the Fool) and discuss if, how, and why Singer’s storytelling still resonates today.
