History Behind the Headlines: Israel, Hamas, and the Current War
Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning
Join this limited series of three sessions that provides a brief but comprehensive Israel education for learners of all backgrounds. In the first session, we will consider the long history Jews have had in the land of Israel as well as the 19th and 20th Zionist philosophies that formed the ethos of the modern State of Israel. Next, we will examine the Israel-Palestinian Conflict and its origins, complexities, and attempted solutions. Finally we will focus on the emergence of Hamas as a mainstay of Palestinian leadership and authority and how its charters speak about Israel, Jews, and Palestinian national aspirations through a radical Islamic framework. Professor Howard Lupovitch, professor of history at Wayne State University and author of Melton’s acclaimed course The Star and the Crescent, will provide us with a deep understanding of Israel’s history that can help us to better understand this critical moment for Israel and Jews around the world.
