From Priestly Robes to Ralph Lauren: Clothing, Connection and Identity

Hosted By: London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS)

This course explores Jewish costume throughout the ages, examining whether Jews dressed to impress or to connect. Starting with biblical descriptions and attitudes toward clothing, the course covers Jewish dress in the early Western European Middle Ages, the impact of emancipation, and the link between Jews and clothing during mass emigration from Eastern Europe to the West. By studying various historical eras and traditions, participants will gain insight into core issues of Jewish identity, tradition, and cultural distinctiveness.
