‘Desires,’ by Celia Dropkin
Hosted By: YIVO
“Desires,” the only novel by Celia (Tsilye) Dropkin (1887–1956), originally serialized in the Jewish Daily Forward from March 31 to June 6, 1934, has been translated into English by Anita Norich. The novel, which marks Dropkin’s shift to prose in the 1930s after immigrating to New York and adopting Yiddish as her primary literary language, explores themes of love, domesticity, and the erotic life through characters reflective of her immigrant experiences. YIVO hosts a discussion on this translation with Anita Norich and Lisa Newman, Director of Publishing and Public Programs at the Yiddish Book Center.
