How literal is the Torah?
Does the Torah mean exactly what it says? How should we read Torah meaningfully today? Until the 11th Century, Jews understood the Bible’s meaning through the lens of ancient rabbinical interpretations. Yet these often diverged from the peshat’, the plain meaning of the text.

As medieval Jews started to pay closer attention to the peshat, radically different, and sometimes controversial, understandings abounded. In this course we will examine how the greatest commentators balanced the traditional approach with the literal meaning of the biblical text
