An Ancient Queen in the Modern Era

Hosted By: Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS)

The 1st-century Jewish historian Josephus Flavius tells the story of an ancient Mesopotamian queen, Helena of Adiabene, who converted to Judaism, made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and fell in love with the city and its residents. Queen Helena was remembered by rabbis and bishops throughout antiquity and the medieval period—in fact, her memory persists to this day, not least because a street in Jerusalem bears her name. Discover the history of this remarkable woman, paying particular attention to how she was remembered in the modern era.
