Abraham on Trial

Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning

According to the bible, our forefather Abraham is asked to make the ultimate sacrifice: to slaughter his beloved son Isaac atop Mt. Moriah. His faith in God seems to know no boundaries as he carries out God’s order, only to be stopped at the last minute by a ministering angel. Rather than resist this commandment, and thereby model a rejection of human sacrifice, he goes through with it and is revered throughout history for his unbendable faith! This exploration of the Akedah (binding), or near sacrifice of Isaac, investigates the subsequent and continuing reverberations of this controversial biblical story. Join expert Melton teacher Lynne Lieberman as she guides us through texts that reveal the impact that this narrative has had on western society throughout history to the present day.
