Commentary on Parashat Vayechi, Genesis 47:28-50:26

Every week, Julie Seltzer, artist and Torah scribe, bakes a challah depicting an aspect of the week’s Torah portion.

So Joseph died at a hundred and ten years old. And they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt. (Genesis 50:26)

jacob's death for vayehi

This is Joseph embalmed–like an Egyptian, as this was where he lived and died. His bones are later brought out from Egypt, as promised, when the Hebrews are set free from slavery.
