The Unbearable Lightness of Judaism

Has Jewish education become an “unbearable lightness of Judaism”? Referencing Kundera’s philosophical novel, Micah Lapidus, a Reform rabbi and educator, encourages us to teach the next generation a Judaism that is deep and demanding, rather than shallow and easy. Lapidus argues that it’s time to transform the burdensome feelings often associated with Jewish education into a “weightness” that gives our lives meaning and value.

Rabbi Micah Lapidus is the Director of Jewish and Hebrew Studies at The Alfred and Adele Davis Academy, Atlanta’s Reform Jewish Day School. Rabbi Lapidus served as president of PARDES: Day Schools of Reform Judaism as well as a trustee of the Central Conference of American Rabbis. He is an avid blogger and musician all which can be found at micahlapidus.com.
