The Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language
Hosted By: YIVO
The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents the world premiere of “The Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language,” a chamber opera by Alex Weiser with libretto by Ben Kaplan. The 50-minute production tells the true story of linguist Yudel Mark’s unfinished attempt to create a comprehensive Yiddish dictionary, blending historical figures with mystical characters that embody the spirit of the language. Performed by a cast of five singers with chamber ensemble, the opera reflects on the ambition of Yiddish culture after the Holocaust and the enduring power of language to shape identity and memory.
