Polish Jewish Collecting and Museums, 1891–1941

Hosted By: YIVO

YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents a discussion of “Displays of Belonging,” which examines how Polish Jewish collectors, museologists, and ethnographers used folk art, fine art, and Judaica to assert Jewish belonging in Poland, especially in the interwar period. Author Sarah Ellen Zarrow traces documentation and display practices from partitioned Poland through the Second Polish Republic, analyzing how integrated Jews identified with Polish culture and negotiated their place within a state increasingly defined as ethnically Polish. The conversation will be led by Jeffrey Shandler.
