The Music and History of Klezmer
Hosted By: Qesher
Qesher presents a lecture on the history and evolution of klezmer music, whose name comes from the Hebrew words kli zemer, meaning “instrument of the singing.” Once used to describe the musicians themselves, the term today also refers to the genre of East European Jewish dance music. The session will trace klezmer’s development from medieval times through the 20th century, with photos, videos, and musical examples drawn from the ethnographic research of Yale Strom in the communities he has personally visited.
