Creative Writing Workshop: Midrash on the Book of Genesis

Hosted By: The Siegal Lifelong Learning Program at Case Western Reserve University

The creative writing tradition of midrash involves writing stories that fill in the gaps and answer questions left open by the Biblical text. People have been writing midrash for thousands of years; a midrash can range from a paragraph to a novel in length. In this class, you will dive into the first half of the first book of the Bible, and explore it not as a religious text but as a great work of literature, full of fascinating people and complex plots. Participants will engage in a variety of exercises, including: reading both ancient and modern midrash; responding to prompts to write their own midrash; creating prompts; discussing how paintings of biblical scenes function as midrash; and sharing their own work with each other. This class is open to people of all religions and no religion, and no prior knowledge of the Bible is necessary.
