Music of the Sephardic Diaspora

Hosted By: Congregation Beth Elohim, The New York Jewish Week

An event featuring featuring Nina Stern and Daphna Mor, “recorder virtuosos” joined by world-renowned musicians of Armenian, Palestinian, Israeli, and American backgrounds. Mor adds her exquisite singing to East of the River’s unique interpretations of Ladino songs and liturgical Poems. This performance debuts material from their upcoming album, Ija Mia.

East of the River, founded by internationally renowned recorder players Nina Stern and Daphna Mor, explores gems of the Medieval European classical repertory as well as timeless melodies from the Middle East, Armenia, North Africa and the Balkans. The musicians’ backgrounds are in classical, Jazz and folk traditions. They have performed at the National Gallery of Art, Chautauqua Institution, Montclair State University’s Peak Performances, Indianapolis Early Music and in NYC at Bargemusic, Joe’s Pub, Le Poisson Rouge and WQXR’s The Greene Space. Stern and Mor, called “recorder virtuosos” by The New York Times, have impressive careers as soloists and have appeared as a duo with the New York Philharmonic and Orchestra of St. Luke’s. The group will soon release its third album, Ija Mia.
