Judith the Chanukah Heroine

Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning

Too scandalous for the Jewish canon, considered the world’s first work of historical fiction, and saved from obscurity by early Christians, the Book of Judith contains one of the most riveting tales of Jewish literature. A wise widow, a cunning temptress, and a fierce warrior, Judith is a hero to rival Queen Esther and a femme fatale of Delilah caliber. But what does Judith’s story have to do with Chanukah, and why on earth are we supposed to eat cheese on the holiday of fried foods in her honor? Join us for this one-of-a-kind Chanukah learning to discover Judith’s story and its message for today.
