JTA Conversations: Book Bans, Yeshivas and the Jewish Back-to-School Stories You Need to Know

As students returned to the classroom for a new school year, two of the most significant national dialogues surrounding education concern the Jewish community.

Throughout 2022, local school districts around the United States have removed books from classrooms and libraries as a result of conservative opposition to LGBTQ-friendly themes and “critical race theory.” Works such as “Maus” and an illustrated adaptation of “The Diary of Anne Frank” have been ensnared in the debates and subsequent backlash.
This past week, a long-running conversation about secular education at yeshivas was thrust into the national spotlight when The New York Times published a in-depth investigation into New York City yeshivas that have received substantial public funding while failing to meet basic standards for subjects like English and math.
Join Philissa Cramer, Andrew Lapin and Julia Gergely, all of whom have reported on education for JTA and the New York Jewish Week, to discuss these storylines and much more. Bring your questions about this back-to-school season!
