Visit the Derfner Judaica Museum Collection

Hosted By: The City Congregation For Humanistic Judaism

Susan Chevlowe will guide viewers through an exploration of highlights from the Derfner Judaica Museum + Art Collection with a focus on the ongoing exhibition Tradition and Remembrance: Treasures of the Derfner Judaica Museum. The exhibition explores the intersections of Jewish history and memory. It tells the stories of art and objects used in traditional Jewish practice in light of the role memory plays in shaping both individual and communal identities. The exhibition begins with secular and ritual objects from the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts founded in Jerusalem in 1906 and continues with objects used in observance of holidays and life cycle events to the present day, including a kippah designed by American minimalist and conceptual artist Sol LeWitt. Among other featured objects are a parcel-gilt filigree case for an Esther Scroll read during Purim from Ionnina, Greece, a hand-drawn marriage contract from Hamadan, Persia, European objects in silver dating from the mid-18th century and examples of late 19th–early 20th century Jewish American folk art.
